Brought my pull list to a con in Portland and it backfired completely

I was at the Portland Comic Expo last month, standing in line at a booth for a signing. I had my pull list folder with me, the one I use at my local shop, just in case I wanted to remember what I was missing. The guy behind me peeked over my shoulder and saw I had some variant covers marked down. He started grilling me about why I was chasing variants instead of reading the actual stories. I tried to explain I read everything, I just like the covers too. He kept pushing, saying I was part of the problem with the hobby now. I ended up stuffing the folder in my bag and not pulling it out for the rest of the day. Made me rethink even bringing that kind of stuff to events again, has anyone else had a stranger judge their collecting habits in person?

Portland Comic Expo is about the last place I'd expect someone to gatekeep pull lists. Variant covers are just fun to collect, plain and simple. That guy needed to mind his own stack.

Right? And the funny thing is, those variant covers are usually the ones keeping the physical market alive for small shops. @riveradams maybe that guy was salty because he missed out on a hot variant earlier in the day and took it out on everyone else.
