Got stuck on a 1970s basement floor patch that took three days to match the old broom finish.

Matching that old broom finish is brutal, I used a stiff brush and a really wet mix.

Way lighter than you'd think" is the part that always gets me. My first try on a job like that looked like I attacked the concrete with an angry cat. The client asked if it was a new decorative style. Getting that old broom feel is more about a gentle suggestion than actual work.

Tell you what, I had to match a 70s slab last year and it was a nightmare. I ended up doing something like @the_robin said, using a wet mix, but I also found the timing was everything. You have to wait for it to set up just right before you even touch it with the broom. I used an old beat up push broom and just barely dragged it, way lighter than you'd think. Took a few test patches on some plywood to get the feel right, but it finally blended in.
