Took me 7 months to figure out my neighbor's 'smart' meter was just a guy in a van with a laptop
I kept getting these weird spikes on my power bill every Tuesday around 3pm, and the utility swore up and down it was my AC. So I started writing down the time and the number each time it happened, and after 7 months of fighting with them I caught a plain white van parked on my street with a guy inside typing on a laptop. Turns out the meter readers in my area weren't even reading meters anymore, they were running software patches on the fly and it was throwing off the readings. I called the city and they admitted the vendor had been doing "remote calibration" without telling anyone. Am I crazy for thinking this whole thing should be a bigger deal than a $14 credit on my bill?
