My PM called my daily log format 'a wall of text' and it made me rethink how I enter field data
I used to dump everything into one big note per day in our construction management app, like 40 lines about deliveries, delays, and who showed up late. My PM pulled me aside on the Riverside job and said she couldn't find anything when a change order came up, it was just a wall of text. So now I split entries by trade and tag them, takes me maybe 10 extra minutes but searching later is way faster. The debate in my head is whether that time is worth it on a small job or if I'm just doing extra work. Curious if others here tag everything or just let the daily log run wild?
Man, ten extra minutes a day on a small job adds up to like 40 hours a year, that is not nothing. Are you really losing that much time searching, or does it just feel cleaner when you tag stuff? On a job with three trades and one crew showing up, what is there to search for exactly, the one concrete pour you already remember? Change orders are the real issue though, and your PM is right that hunting through a wall of text when money is on the line is its own kind of slow. Maybe the move is tag by trade only on jobs over a certain size and keep the free form dump for the little ones. Calling it a "debate in your head" kind of tells me you already know it is extra work, the question is just whether the pain it saves you later is real or just in your head.
