PSA: A ground guy in Tacoma called me out on my hand signals

I was setting a big AC unit on a roof last month, and the spotter said my 'lower slowly' signal was too fast. He told me, 'Your hand is moving like you're swatting a fly, I can't tell the speed.' I started making my palm face down and moving it an inch at a time, way more clear. Has anyone else had a signal corrected on site that made a real difference?

That "flat hand vs firm fist" thing is so real. My first signal screw up was giving the classic "raise the boom" arm pump, but I was just kind of flapping my elbow. The operator on the radio just said, "Man, are you telling me up, or are you just excited?" I felt like a total muppet. It's crazy how a tiny bit of sloppy movement turns a clear signal into confusing noise.

Yeah, that "swatting a fly" comment would stick with me too. It's a good catch from the ground guy. I had a rigger tell me once my "stop" signal was just a flat hand, not a firm fist, and it looked too much like "hold." Making that fist really clear changed everything. Those little corrections from a good spotter are pure gold.

So how do you even find a spotter that good, or is it just luck of the draw?
