Ran the load chart off my phone for 3 weeks until a tagline in Kent made me rethink it
Last month I was booming out a 40 foot radius pick on a tilt-up panel in Kent and my phone app said I had 800 lbs of capacity left. The load chart card in the cab said 300. I had been trusting the app for weeks because it was faster than walking back to the cab, and a journeyman on the ground asked me a simple thing about where that number came from. Turns out the app had defaulted to a different counterweight config than what was actually on the machine. I pulled every paper chart out of the cab that afternoon and checked all of them against the app, and two of the five were off. If you run an app, when did you last verify it against the actual chart for your counterweight setup?
This is the same thing that happens with GPS in my truck. It gets me close but every so often it wants me to turn into a lake, and I have learned the hard way to trust the road signs over the screen. Your phone app story is really the same lesson, just with way higher stakes. Anything that gives you a fast answer from a default setting is only as good as that setting matching your real world. I have seen it with online calculators, recipe apps, weather apps, all of it. The tool is fine until the thing it assumes about you is wrong. Good on that journeyman for asking the question, that is what made you go check.
