Hot take: I think the 'show, don't tell' rule is overrated for beginners
I read a study from the University of Iowa's writing program that found new writers who focused on 'telling' first actually produced clearer drafts. It helped them get the basic story down before getting lost in description. Anyone else find that strict rules can sometimes block the creative flow?

That study is actually from the University of Nebraska, not Iowa (just a small correction).

Oh right, you're totally correct about it being Nebraska. I mean, I always get those midwest schools mixed up for some reason, idk why. It's a good catch by @grayc27 because the details do matter when you're talking about where a study came from. Maybe it's just me but I feel like I see that mix-up happen a lot with those big ten schools. Anyway, thanks for setting it straight.
