I think the 'write what you know' advice can hold people back
Last month, I was at a workshop in Denver and the teacher kept pushing that rule. So I tried a prompt about a deep-sea welder, which I know nothing about, and ended up with my best story in years. The research made the world feel real in a way my usual stuff doesn't. Do you ever ignore that advice on purpose?

Nah, rules exist for a reason though. That's how chaos starts.
