Talked to a librarian about my fantasy world and she asked one question that broke my whole magic system

She just said 'where does the energy come from?' and I sat there for 5 minutes realizing I had no answer, now I'm rewriting everything from scratch to give it actual rules instead of hand-waving. Has anyone else had a random conversation totally derail their project like that?

Bruh, that reminds me of my buddy who was writing a sci-fi novel about teleportation. He was telling me about his whole system one night over beers and I asked him what happens to the atoms that were already at the destination when someone shows up there. Dude went dead silent for like a full minute and then said he had to start the whole book over because that one question broke everything about how his teleporters worked. He ended up rewriting the entire lore around that paradox and honestly the new version was way better than his original hand-wavy stuff. Sometimes the simple questions hit harder than all the complex worldbuilding notes you wrote yourself.

Yeah, have you tried giving the magic a physical cost? Like it burns body fat or drains heat from the area? That's what I did. My whole system was "wizards just do stuff" until someone asked how they survive doing big spells. Now every spell pulls from the caster's own life force. It changed the story way more than I expected. Made magic feel dangerous instead of just cool.
