My framer laughed at me for wanting 2x6 walls in our Boise build, turns out he was right
When we started planning our build outside Boise, I was dead set on 2x6 exterior walls for the extra insulation, but my framer Dave told me I was overthinking it. He said with our mild winters and the spray foam we were already paying for, the 2x4s would do the job and save me about $4,200. I argued with him for a week, then ran the numbers on the energy modeling and he was basically spot on. We framed it his way and just got our first power bill, $94 for the whole house in January. Anyone else had a contractor talk them out of an upgrade and actually be right?
The part about running the numbers on the energy modeling is what got me. I used to figure thicker walls always means better no matter what, but once you factor in the spray foam and the climate, the math just doesn't back that up. $94 in January says plenty.
