My skepticism about spray foam insulation went away after one winter in Ohio

I was totally convinced traditional fiberglass batts were the way to go, thought spray foam was just hype and way too expensive at $1.50 per board foot. After a brutal January with heating bills hitting $380 a month and drafts in our new build, I finally let the contractor talk me into closed-cell foam in the attic. Has anyone else made the switch and actually seen their bills drop?

Did sealing the attic drafts make a noticeable difference that first month?

Why does everyone assume foam is snake oil until they freeze their tails off? I was exactly like you, thought I was saving money with fiberglass then paid $340 in January with ice dams forming on my roof. Made the switch to closed cell in the attic and my bills dropped to around $180 the next month. The drafts stopped completely and the house finally held heat like it should. People don't realize that air sealing is half the battle, not just the insulation itself. I'd never go back now.
