Saw a house in Austin with a full wall of windows that opened like a garage door onto the patio.
It was a custom build on a tight lot, and that simple choice made the whole living area feel twice as big, which has me rethinking our own plans for a small backyard.

Oh man, @dixon.spencer is totally right about the bug issue. You'd need a full screened porch setup behind that door, which gets crazy expensive and kills the open feel they were going for. The privacy thing is huge too, you'd basically be living in a fishbowl for your neighbors. And the energy bills in Austin with a wall that isn't sealed? That's a hard pass from me, it sounds cool but has so many problems.

That's a great idea until you think about the bugs. In a place like Austin, you're basically building a giant welcome sign for every mosquito and moth in the county. You'd need some serious screens, which adds cost and can ruin the clean look. It also seems like a privacy trade-off on a tight lot. Everyone can see right into your living room the second that door goes up. The thermal loss in summer or winter would probably be brutal, too.
