Watching a friend's custom build in Boise get delayed for six weeks over a window spec
The architect's drawing just said 'large kitchen window' but the framer needed the exact rough opening size down to the 1/8 inch. Now I make sure every single opening, even for doors, is fully dimensioned on my own plans before framing starts. Anyone else have a simple drawing detail that caused a huge holdup?

Ever just write "standard outlet" and then realize you have no idea what that means? I mean, I've definitely caused a few confused stares from electricians.

Yeah, "standard outlet" is one of those phrases that seems clear until you think about it. There's no real standard because outlets differ by country and even by the age of the house wiring. You're probably picturing a 15-amp, 120-volt duplex receptacle, the common one in North America. But an electrician needs to know the exact voltage, amperage, and if it needs to be GFCI or something else. It's always better to just write out the full spec to avoid those stares.

Used to assume everyone meant the same thing by that. Then I had to replace an outlet in my own kitchen and realized my "standard" was not the same as the old wiring in the wall. Now I just describe exactly what I need, down to the voltage and amperage. Saves a lot of time and avoids getting the wrong part.
