Went with a 2x10 header over the 2x8 the plans called for, and the inspector waved it through in 5 seconds
My builder wanted to use the 2x8 header the plans showed over the 8 foot garage opening, but I pushed back and we went with a doubled 2x10 instead. Cost me about $60 extra in lumber and added maybe an hour of work on a Saturday. When the county inspector came out to my place in Bend, he looked at it, nodded, and said "that's how I'd want my own house done" before signing off. Anyone else upgrade a structural piece just for peace of mind and end up glad they did?
Did you check with the truss or header span tables before bumping up, or did you just go with your gut? We did something close to that on our place outside Redmond when we framed the shop door. Plans called for a single 2x10 over a 9 foot span and my gut said no way, so we doubled it up and glued it too. The lumber yard guy even said the single would pass, but doubling it took maybe 40 bucks and an extra half hour, and that header feels like a rock now. Inspectors around here seem to like seeing stuff built a little heavier than the minimum, it tells them you care about the work. Peace of mind is worth way more than 60 bucks when you are staring at that opening every day.
