2FA backup codes on paper got me thinking after a coffee spill
Tbh I never really thought about my backup codes until last week when my friend spilled coffee all over his desk and his only copy of them was on a sticky note. He lost access to his email for 3 days because he didn't have a second method set up. That got me checking my own setup, and I found out I only had one printed sheet from 2021, no digital copy anywhere. I spent an hour moving them into a password manager vault with an encrypted note, plus printed two copies. Has anyone else had a close call with backup codes, or do you keep them somewhere smarter than paper?
The "sticky note on the desk" part is what gets me. That's the worst spot for them since it's in plain sight and one spill kills it. But paper in a drawer somewhere is not much better if you never remember where you put it. I keep mine in my password manager plus one printed copy in a locked box, and honestly the digital one has saved me twice already. Paper alone is a gamble, digital alone is a gamble, you need both.
