Spotted something at a coffee shop in Denver that made me rethink public WiFi
I was working out of a busy coffee shop near downtown Denver last Tuesday, and I noticed this guy next to me just logging into banking on the free WiFi without a second thought. It got me thinking about how many people don't realize those networks can be sniffed pretty easily by anyone with basic tools. Has anyone ever actually caught someone using a packet sniffer or something similar in a public spot like that?

Honestly I think people worry way too much about this. I've been using public WiFi for years and never had a single problem. The banks and websites all use encryption now anyway so even if someone's sniffing packets they'd just see a bunch of scrambled junk.

I get what you're saying, but I think it's a bit too relaxed of an approach... just because you haven't had a problem doesn't mean the risk isn't real. That encryption you're talking about only protects your data once you're actually on a secure site, but there's a lot of traffic that goes through your device before that happens. Someone sitting in the same coffee shop could easily set up a fake hotspot with the same name and intercept everything you do before you even reach the bank's site. I've seen people get their accounts drained just from checking their email on an open network, it's not that rare. Plus, those fake login pages for Facebook or Instagram are way too easy to set up and look exactly like the real thing. Maybe I'm just more careful than most, but I'd rather use my phone's data than take that chance.
