That week I found 38 open RDP ports on a single office network in Tulsa

Honestly I used to be one of those people who thought antivirus was enough too. Until I saw a buddy's small business get completely owned through an exposed RDP port he forgot about. Totally changed my mind on how bad that gap really is.

Spotted something at a coffee shop in Denver that made me rethink public WiFi

I get what you're saying, but I think it's a bit too relaxed of an approach... just because you haven't had a problem doesn't mean the risk isn't real. That encryption you're talking about only protects your data once you're actually on a secure site, but there's a lot of traffic that goes through your device before that happens. Someone sitting in the same coffee shop could easily set up a fake hotspot with the same name and intercept everything you do before you even reach the bank's site. I've seen people get their accounts drained just from checking their email on an open network, it's not that rare. Plus, those fake login pages for Facebook or Instagram are way too easy to set up and look exactly like the real thing. Maybe I'm just more careful than most, but I'd rather use my phone's data than take that chance.

Went to a custom shop in Portland last week and noticed something about their assembly line

Have you tried just sticking a piece of the same melamine down on top of the sheet where you're cutting? That's what I do when I'm making a jig or template. I just screw a thin strip right through the cut line on the track, and it acts like a zero clearance insert for that one pass. Works way better than tape for me, especially on that slick melamine surface where tape doesn't always want to stick.

The day I caught myself buying bulk avocados for 3 years

Gasped reading @jamesfox's 14 banana situation. That's a nightmare I'd never recover from.

Saw a celeb post a crying selfie after a bad review and it was clearly staged

My cousin's girlfriend does the same thing with 400 followers. Best way to spot it is look at the edges of the photo for any staging gear or watch the hand placement if they're "crying" while holding something.
