Overheard my roommate's friend laugh about his fryer fire story

He was telling her about the time he left the basket hanging over the oil to drain while he went to grab a beer from the garage. Came back 5 minutes later and the dripping oil had caught fire, burned the countertop in his old apartment on Elm Street. Cost him the full $850 security deposit plus another $300 to replace the landlord's cheap plastic cutting board that melted next to it. I always drain my stuff on paper towels on the stove now, never over the hot oil. Anyone else had a near miss from walking away that long?

Honestly that seems kinda wild. Oil dripping from a basket that slowly is usually barely sizzling when it hits the hot stuff below, not like a blowtorch. Feels like the dude must've had the heat cranked or left way more oil on there than normal. Paper towels on the stove works, but that's also a fire hazard if you forget to turn the burner off, so it's not like that's foolproof either. Probably just one of those things that takes one specific bad setup to actually go wrong.
