Serious question, did anyone else blow $90 on a "no mess" fryer basket that still splatters oil everywhere?
So about three weeks ago I grabbed one of those fancy clip on fryer baskets from a kitchen store here in Boise, the tag said $89.99 and the box promised zero splatter and easy draining. I get home, fill my Dutch oven with peanut oil, drop in a batch of wings, and within 30 seconds oil is popping over the rim and hitting my stove and my forearm. The basket mesh is way too wide, like the holes are big enough that hot oil just sails right through instead of staying in the pot. I stuck a thermometer in and my oil was at 350, right where it should be, so it wasn't me running it too hot. Now I'm out 90 bucks, I've got a greasy stove top, and a small burn on my wrist that I've been covering with a bandaid at the gym all week. I went back to just using my spider strainer and a splatter screen for 20 total, which honestly works better. Has anyone found a basket that actually keeps the oil in the pot, or is that just a made up thing they put on the box?
Kitchen gadgets are the one thing I've stopped trusting the box on. The same thing happens with "nonstick" pans that stick, "dishwasher safe" stuff that rusts, and "cut proof" gloves that are basically just thin cloth. Seems like the price tag and the promises never match up. At least a spider strainer and splatter screen don't lie about what they do.
