The 2018 county fair tempura disaster still haunts my kitchen setup

I was frying zucchini at the Larimer County fair in Fort Collins when the batter splattered onto my timer and burned my wrist so bad I dropped the whole basket, and now I always use a cheap plastic clip-on thermometer with a lanyard, has anyone else switched tools after one bad day?
