Furnace died at 2am in Berkeley last week and the $85 part fixed it
Our 18 year old furnace crapped out last Tuesday night when it was 12 degrees outside. I called a guy on Wednesday who quoted me $1,400 for a new board, but I grabbed the part number off the old one and found the same board at a supply house on Federal for $85. Swapped it in 20 minutes and the heat kicked back on that same afternoon. Has anyone else had a repair quote come in that far off from what the part actually costs?
Man, $1,400 for a board is wild when it's an $85 part. I did the same thing with my water heater last winter, pulled the number off the old control board, found it online for $70, and the plumber wanted $600.
