That YouTube tip about drywall anchors was completely backwards for my wall

Some guy named Mike on a DIY channel said toggle bolts are useless and to just use plastic anchors with a hammer. Around here in Phoenix the plaster is rock hard and my 8 pound mirror bracket pulled clean out in two days. I swapped to those 50 pound metal zip anchors from the hardware store, took me maybe 15 minutes to redo both spots, and it's been solid for a month now. Anyone else have luck with one type of anchor over another on old plaster?
