Tried using wood filler on a deep gouge in my deck instead of replacing the whole board

Spent about 4 hours filling and sanding a single 8-foot pressure-treated board, and now two months later the filler's cracking worse than the original damage, so what do you use for deep outdoor repairs that actually holds up?

Used to swear by wood filler but now I'm all about epoxy for outdoor stuff.

All about epoxy" feels like a pretty strong stance for something that's basically fancy glue. I mean, is regular wood filler really that bad for a birdhouse or something?
