Warning: I wasted $450 on a fancy smart thermostat that never worked with my old house wiring
After 3 hours of trying to install it in my 1950s bungalow near Cleveland, I found out my system doesn't have a C wire and the adapter they sent fried the transformer, so has anyone else had luck with those cheap plug-in thermostat adapters or should I just stick with my dumb mercury switch one?

Those old mercury thermostats are basically bulletproof.

Oh man, those things are tanks! I had one in my old house that was probably from the 70s and it never missed a beat, even after the kids knocked it off the wall twice. I finally swapped it out for a digital one a few years back, but honestly I kind of miss how simple it was to just twist the dial and feel that satisfying click.

Did you ever worry about the mercury in it or was it just part of the deal with old house stuff?
