Site survey with a busted total station changed my whole field setup
Last month I was out on a commercial reno in Austin and my total station started glitching halfway through the morning. I had to call the supplier and wait two hours for a loaner, which blew my whole schedule. While I sat there I realized I never checked the battery contacts or the tribrach screw, both were loose and full of dust. Now I keep a small cleaning kit and spare screws in every vehicle, plus I run a quick check on the setup before I leave the office. Anyone else had a tool die on site and wish you'd done a basic once-over first?
Man I feel this in my bones. Had a level run a few years back where the tripod leg clamp was stripped and the whole thing tipped while I was walking back to the truck. Cost me half a day and a new lens cap. Now I keep a ziplock bag in the truck with spare screws, a small brush, and some contact cleaner, takes two minutes to check before I roll out. That quick once-over has saved me way more time than it costs. Sitting around waiting on a loaner is the worst feeling when you know it was something dumb you could've caught.
