Lol a 12 inch knife just for a first coat? That's like bringing a sword to a paint fight. Seems like overkill for just slapping mud up there to me. I've always used a 14 inch trowel for ceilings and it works fine. Maybe if you're doing a crazy vaulted ceiling or something, but for a normal flat one it just seems like extra tool to clean.

Read a thing about bigger knives holding more mud. Lets you cover more area before reloading. Could see that saving time on a big ceiling.

You said "extra tool to clean" but that's the thing, a 12 inch knife IS my trowel for the first coat. I just use it flat to lay on a ton of mud fast, then switch to my finishing trowel. One less heavy coat to sand later.
