Rant: My basement Reno guy swore by that cheap floor leveler from Home Depot
I hired a contractor named Dave for my basement in Sherwood Park and he insisted on using $25 bags of leveler instead of the good stuff. I told him I wanted something that wouldn't crack after a year, but he said 'it's all the same, dude, just save your cash.' Well, six months in and I've got hairline cracks running all through the pour. Anyone else had a contractor push a budget material that totally failed on them?

Hold up, I'm gonna play devil's advocate here. Dave might have actually been right and your prep work was the real problem, not the leveler. Those cheap bags from Home Depot are literally the same chemical formula as the fancy stuff once you mix it right. I've used that $25 leveler in my own garage and it's been solid for three years now with zero cracks. Maybe your concrete wasn't properly dampened before the pour or you didn't use a bonding agent. 90% of the time when leveler cracks, it's because the installer rushed the prep or mixed it too thick. Just saying, Dave might be a hack but the product itself is fine.
