Back in '05 we'd manually shim every guide rail joint, but now I just use a laser alignment tool from the pit to the overhead.

Is the old-school hands-on method still better for training new mechanics, or does the tech save enough time on a 20-floor job to be worth the upfront cost?

Anna_Ross19 is right, you need that shim feel before the laser saves a day.

Laser for speed, but start them on the shims.

Yeah, 'start them on the shims' is the key part. My buddy tried skipping that step and went straight to the laser setup, and his timing was garbage for weeks. He had to go back to basics with the shims before it finally clicked.
