Rant: Bought a $400 laser alignment tool for the hoistway and it saved a whole day on a job last week.
We were fighting a door alignment issue in a retrofit, and this thing showed the rail was off by 3mm over 20 feet. Anyone have a cheaper method that's just as accurate?

That's a solid win for the tool. Could you rent one out to the crew for future jobs to spread the cost?

Renting out a specialty tool often leads to it coming back broken or missing parts. The repair bills and downtime usually eat up any rental income you make. It's simpler to just let each crew buy their own when they need it.

It's the same deal with a good kitchen knife or a real torque wrench. You buy the right tool once and it just pays for itself over and over by cutting out the guesswork. That three mil you found would've been hours of headaches and callbacks. Sometimes the cheap way is just the long, expensive way in disguise.
