This old guy in a Chicago high rise told me something I still think about

I was fixing a door operator on a 1970s Otis last fall, and the building's retired super came by. He watched me work for a minute and said, 'You know, the best mechanics listen to the car before they even open the pit.' He meant the sound of the motor and cables. I've been doing that on every callout since. Has anyone else had a simple tip like that stick with them for years?

Totally get that. Some advice just clicks and changes how you do things.

That Chicago story really sticks with you. I get what caleb_thomas85 means about advice that just clicks. My question is, what are you actually listening for when you stand there before opening the pit? Is it a specific kind of hum, a rattle, or just the general rhythm of it all? I'd love to know what that old super taught you to hear.

That "listen to the car" thing is spot on. I always check the floor indicator lights first, a lot of calls are just a burnt-out bulb.
