Rant: I used to chop onions like an idiot for 10 years
I always cried like a baby cutting onions until last week when a chef buddy told me to chill them in the freezer for 15 minutes first. No tearing at all even with a dull knife. Anyone else got a simple trick that took them forever to learn?

Cried like a baby for years too, felt like a total fool when I finally learned the freezer trick. Put on some lab goggles one time as a joke, honestly worked better than any onion hack I ever tried. Looked like a complete weirdo but my eyes were bone dry the whole time. Now I just accept that I'm gonna look stupid no matter what, at least I'm not ugly crying over dinner prep anymore.

The whole "looking like a total weirdo" thing is REAL. I tried the freezer trick too and it helped but not completely. What actually works for me is sticking the onion in the fridge for a solid 15 minutes before cutting, not just the freezer for a few seconds. Colder onion, less gas released. I also use a super sharp knife and don't even look up when I make the first cut, just slice real quick. No gagging, no tears, and I look like a normal person instead of a mad scientist in my kitchen.
