That 'distracted boyfriend' meme makes no sense when you reverse the roles

I saw someone swap the girlfriend and the other woman and suddenly the whole joke falls apart, so is it really about distraction or just about who we think looks 'worse' in that situation?

Oh I totally get what you mean, it's like the whole joke relies on who we already see as the "villain." When you swap them, suddenly it just looks like a guy who can't keep his eyes off someone and it doesn't hit the same way. That really makes you wonder if the humor is more about judging the woman than the actual situation.

That reminds me, my cousin tried this at a family BBQ and my uncle got SO offended. He was like "why is she staring at me like that" and we had to explain the whole thing. Basically proved the point without even trying.

Heard a friend telling me she tried the swap at a party and everyone just laughed awkwardly because it turned the guy into a creep instead of a joke. @lindaowens you're totally right, it really does all hinge on who we're used to seeing as the "bad guy" in the setup.
