That peanut butter ad meme finally clicked for me last night

Saw that meme with the jar of peanut butter and the weird face. Thought it was just random dumb internet stuff. Then my buddy showed me the original video from 2012. It's this guy who does absurd food reviews. Suddenly the whole running joke made sense. Anyone else had a meme take that long to understand?

Three years ago someone sent me that Distracted Boyfriend meme and I stared at it for ten minutes before realizing it was supposed to be funny. I actually looked up the stock photo source and found the whole backstory about the models being a real couple. Now I have a weird habit of researching every meme that confuses me or I end up down rabbit holes for hours.

Respectfully, I see it the opposite way. To me, the fun is in the mystery and the quick laugh, not digging into every detail behind it. If I have to research a meme to get it, it kind of kills the joke for me. Your mileage varies, but I think you overthink things that are supposed to be simple.
