I thought fermenting veggies without weights was a mistake until last summer.

Tried it on a whim and my batch turned out great. Now I see that sometimes less gear can work just fine.

Half-inch brine above the veggies prevents floaters every time.

Yeah but that extra brine waters down the flavor of the whole jar. You're trading floaters for weaker taste. I always pack them tight and leave just enough brine to cover, then use fermentation weights. It keeps everything submerged without diluting the spices and vinegar kick.
