A weird bug issue popped up at my shop in Boise last week
I got a shipment of 50 white hydrangeas from my usual supplier on Tuesday, and by Friday, they were covered in these tiny black flies (like, hundreds of them). Turns out the larvae were in the water tubes from the grower. I had to toss the whole batch and deep clean my cooler. Has anyone else had a pest problem with a specific flower type lately?

That's a nightmare, sorry to hear it. Did the supplier offer any kind of credit for the ruined batch?

Ugh, that's brutal. Had the same thing happen with a shipment of chrysanthemums last month, total write-off.

Supplier probably won't do much since the bugs were already there when you got them. They'll blame it on storage or handling on your end every time. Slime in the water tubes is a dead giveaway though, that's on the grower not you. I've had it happen with alstroemeria before, same nasty black fly situation. Deep cleaning the cooler is smart but you gotta check every tube from now on before putting them in the back. Those larvae can survive a standard cleaning cycle too, they're tough little bastards.
