TIL I was cutting flower stems wrong for 10 years until a vendor at the farmer's market pointed out my jagged cuts

She told me my blunt snips were crushing the stems and that's why my hydrangeas kept wilting after two days, has anyone else had a dumb basic mistake like this that took way too long to figure out?

Oh my god yes! I did the exact same thing with my hydrangeas for years and couldn't figure out why they'd droop so fast. The boiling water trick is basically magic, I felt like such a goof when I finally tried it and they lasted over a week.

That thing about the jagged cuts is actually a common misunderstanding. You want a clean cut, but for hydrangeas the real trick is to immediately dip the cut ends in boiling water for about 30 seconds or sear them with a flame. The sap seals up the stems and stops them from wilting. I learned that from a flower farmer who said the cut angle barely matters compared to stopping that sap leak.

Dip the stems in boiling water first. That's the only trick that's ever worked for me.
