Update: A foreman in Toledo showed me why you never skip the pre-heat on a cold core box.

He pulled a perfect, unfilled casting from the line and said, 'That's a $200 core, gone. The metal hit a cold surface and froze before it could fill.' Anyone else have a simple step they've seen crews try to rush?

Oh man, that hurts just reading it. I mean, you see that happen once and you never forget it. It's so easy to think you'll save a few minutes, but it always costs way more in the end. Watching good material get wasted because of a skipped step is the worst feeling.

Tell me about it. Learned that lesson the hard way with a whole sheet of plywood last year. Still makes me cringe thinking about it.

Yeah, @sarah829, it's the hidden cost in scrap that really kills you.
