Hot take: My old rock tumbler from a box store versus a Lortone 33B is like night and day.
After running identical batches of Montana agates for three weeks, the Lortone's consistent barrel speed produced a perfect polish while the cheaper one just made gritty rocks.

Honestly used to think a tumbler was just a tumbler. Seeing that side by side result with the agates is pretty convincing though. Guess the motor really does make a difference.

Yeah, that "tumbler is just a tumbler" idea is everywhere. It's like thinking all blenders are the same until you try a cheap one versus a good one. The motor, the bearings, the little things you don't see make all the difference. I had the same shock with headphones, where the cheap pair sounded flat but the decent ones actually had bass. Makes you wonder what else we're oversimplifying.

Right? It's funny how we learn these lessons over and over. Daniel_lane30's blender example is spot on, you don't know what you're missing until you see it side by side. I went through the same thing with kitchen knives, thinking my old block set was fine. Now I'm looking at my coffee grinder with deep suspicion, wondering what hidden flaws I'm putting up with. The motor is probably the secret hero in half the things we own.
