My neighbor said 'all rocks are basically the same' while pointing at a chunk of granite and a piece of pumice.
I had to explain that one floats and the other doesn't, which really made me think about how we take basic physical properties for granted, so what's the most surprising rock fact you've had to explain to someone?

Honestly, explaining that obsidian is volcanic glass and not just a "shiny black rock" always gets people. They see it in a museum and think it's man-made. The fact it breaks into edges sharper than surgical steel blows minds every time.
