My old rock hammer finally gave out after 15 years on a trip to Moab
The head just flew off when I was trying to get a sample of that red sandstone last week, landed right in a cactus patch. I had to finish the day with a regular hammer from the truck, which was not great for the fine work. Ended up ordering a new Estwing online that night, cost me about $65. Anyone have tips for breaking in a new hammer without wrecking the grip?

How about just working it on some softer rock first?

You think softer rock is the answer? My old hammer gave up after granite, so I'm not taking any chances with this new one. Honestly, @averywilliams is right about it throwing off your whole rhythm, and I need this Estwing to last. I'm gonna break it in on something that won't fight back, like maybe some questionable drywall in my garage. Starting with soft rock just feels like asking for another bad surprise.

That's a real bummer about the old hammer, fifteen years is a good run. Losing a tool like that in the field always throws off your whole rhythm. Hope the new Estwing treats you just as well.
