Vent: I was about to give up on my thin section
I kept getting chatter marks on this tricky shale sample from the Utah field trip. My professor said to try a drop of kerosene on the lap wheel, and it smoothed out completely in like two passes. Anyone else have a weird lube trick for stubborn rocks?

Always thought kerosene was too messy, but that trick is a total game changer for shales!

Wait, why was I using a paintbrush like a caveman? I tried the spray bottle thing last night and it was SO much easier. I feel like I wasted a whole year of my life.

Saw my buddy try that on a stubborn piece last week. He used a cheap spray bottle from the dollar store, just a light mist. The kerosene broke it down without turning everything into a greasy mess. He cleaned a whole shelf of specimens in like twenty minutes.
