A miswired thermostat had the heat and cool stages reversed
The customer thought their system was possessed until I traced the wires.

Whoa, "ghost in the machine" is right, but that's genuinely scary. A swapped heat and cool command isn't just a prank, it means the system was fighting itself nonstop. Imagine it's 90 out and the furnace kicks on because the thermostat thinks it's cooling. That's how you get a real breakdown, not a spooky one. I'd be freaked out too, finding that. Just a simple wiring mix-up can make a house feel totally haunted.
