Man, that sounds bad but is it always that big a deal? Sometimes a little soft wood is just from old moisture that dried out. Couldn't you just cut out the bad section and patch in some new plywood? Feels like a fixable problem, not a total disaster.

Honestly, I just buy what looks good and fits my budget that week.

Caps can pop off under pressure though.
