Update: Solo hike in Iceland and a family call

I was hiking alone in Iceland last week. My aunt called out of the blue. She mentioned a big family gathering back home. It left me feeling lonely on the trail. I stopped by a glacier to sit and reflect. Now I'm thinking about visiting family soon. How do you balance solo travel with family connections?

You stopped at a glacier alone? That seems dangerous.

I told three people my exact route and when to expect check-ins. Checking the park service website for recent conditions was key too. I only walked on the clearly marked, packed-down tourist paths and didn't wander off. It felt safe with that prep.

I know that exact feeling, when a call from home hits you differently in a quiet place like that. I was in the Scottish Highlands once and my brother called, and suddenly I just missed everyone terribly. It's a sharp reminder that the solo time is nice, but those roots matter too. I try to plan a visit for shortly after a big trip, it gives me something to look forward to.
