Serious question after talking to my neighbor about composting

Ran into my neighbor Carlos last week while he was tending his bins and he told me he hasn't bought bagged soil in 3 years because of his setup. He said it saves him around $200 a year and his garden looks way better than mine. Has anyone else in ABQ gotten real results from a DIY compost system or is it just not worth the smell and effort?

Start with a simple worm bin from a local nursery here in town. I've got a two bin setup in my backyard off Lomas and it's been a GAME changer for my tomatoes and chiles. The smell thing is overblown if you layer your greens and browns right, and you just flip it once a week. Carlos is right about the $200 savings, my pepper yield doubled after I started mixing my own compost into the clay soil.

Yeah but nobody ever talks about what happens when you get a sudden ant invasion in the bin... had to tear mine apart last summer after they moved in overnight.
