Spent 6 months overpaying on Facebook ads before I found the hidden setting

The problem was my cost per click was double what I saw online. Turns out the 'audience network' toggle was on by default and I never unchecked it. Has anyone else found random default settings that wreck your budget?

Easy to miss. Those tiny checkboxes always get you.

Clicked through to my Shopify settings one time and found 'tracking markup' was automatically adding 15% to my ad costs for "data collection fees" or something... never signed up for that. Facebook has this thing called 'dynamic creative' that turns on by default too, it'll test random images and headlines from your page and eat your budget testing stuff you'd never approve. Check your ad account settings under 'business tools' - there's a whole list of connected data sources that can drain your spend without you knowing.
