Warning: That Facebook Ads audience overlap tool nearly cost me $500 in one day

I was running three separate ad sets for a local landscaping client in Denver and saw my cost per lead jump from $12 to $47 overnight. Turns out I was bidding against myself because all three audiences shared 60% of the same people. Has anyone else had that sneaky overlap problem wreck their numbers like that?

Dixon's cereal coupon comparison is spot on. Facebook basically lets you pay more to show your ads to the same 60 people three times. Had a client running retargeting and lookalikes that were 80% the same crowd, total money pit. That overlap tool should be mandatory reading before you hit publish.

Man that stinks! I've noticed this same kind of thing happens all the time with grocery store coupons. You clip three different digital coupons for cereal but they all come from the same parent company so you only save a dollar instead of the five bucks you thought you were getting. It's like the system is designed to trick you into thinking you're being smart.

Dixon, cereal coupons don't overlap like ad audiences do.
