Unpopular opinion: I ran client retainers without written scopes for 6 years and thought I was being the 'easy to work with' agency
Back in 2017 I had a client in Phoenix who started with a simple monthly retainer, and every time they asked for 'one more little thing' I just did it because saying yes felt easier than drawing a line. Fast forward three years and that same account had snowballed into logo work, print ads, and even a podcast edit, all for the original $2,500 a month, and I was working 60 hour weeks to keep up. The moment it clicked was a Friday call where their marketing director casually mentioned they had a separate $15,000 budget for 'the extras' that I had been eating for free the entire time. I hired a contract lawyer in Austin the next month and we built a real scope doc with change order language, and the wild part is nobody pushed back or left. Anyone else here learn the hard way that being the nice agency just means being the cheap one?
