Why I changed my mind about AI mashups being just silly toys

I had a convo with my buddy Mark last weekend who runs a small bakery. He showed me an AI mashup of a croissant shaped like a laptop and said it gave him the idea for his best selling pastry last month. It hit different because it made me realize these weird images can actually spark real creative ideas, not just laughs. Has anyone else used a mashup as inspiration for something practical?

I actually read an article in Wired last month about a graphic designer who used AI mashups to break out of creative ruts. She said the weirdness of them forced her brain to make connections she wouldn't have thought of on her own. So the croissant laptop thing might seem silly to someone scrolling past, but the subconscious works in weird ways. There's a difference between mindless scrolling and actually sitting with a mashup long enough to ask "what if someone made this real?" Mark's bakery story is proof that even a laugh can unlock something useful if you pay attention. Writing off all mashups as noise is like saying doodles can't lead to real art.

Honestly gotta push back on this one. I see those AI mashup images all the time and they blend together into the same weird noise after a while. Ngl most of them look like someone just typed random words and the machine vomited out something ugly. The croissant laptop thing sounds like a joke not real inspiration, and I bet your buddy would have come up with that idea anyway just by thinking about what his customers like. I think we give AI way too much credit for stuff our own brains were already doing. These tools are fun for a laugh but calling them practical inspiration feels like a stretch to me.

Oh man, @the_thomas you're kinda hitting at something but I think you're taking this all way too seriously. Like yeah AI mashups are goofy and half the time they look like somebody fed a toaster a crayon drawing, but so what? It's not that deep. People act like every single image that pops out of these things has to be some profound breakthrough or it's worthless. The croissant laptop thing is funny, that's the whole point. Sometimes a laugh is enough, you don't need to turn it into a lecture about human creativity versus machines. Not everything needs to be "practical inspiration" to be worth looking at for two seconds.
