A customer in Omaha taught me something about trust I still think about

I was installing a basic system for an older lady about 10 years ago. She watched me run the wire and said, 'You know, my last guy just taped it to the baseboard. You're putting it in the wall.' I told her that's just how it's done right. She smiled and said, 'That's what I paid for.' It was a simple job, maybe $400 total, but her noticing that small detail stuck with me. It reminded me that people are watching our work even if they don't know the tech. Anyone else have a customer who pointed out something simple you did right?

Used to think customers only cared about the final price and if things worked. Had a guy watch me replace his brake pads once, real quiet the whole time. When I finished he just pointed at the old parts I'd cleaned up and put in a box for him and said "appreciate you not leaving my garage a mess." That was it. Made me realize the little respectful things, the clean-up, the explaining, that's what they're actually buying a lot of the time. Totally changed how I handle every job now.

People notice when you treat their stuff like your own.

Huh, I kinda disagree. @barbara_campbell I think some folks just don't notice or care about the process at all, they just want it done cheap. I've had customers who would've been fine with the taped wire.
